PART 1: Our Leadership Journey So Far

Spotlight on CYA’s Young Leaders: Tom, Heidi & Prash

Leadership at Coventry Youth Activists (CYA) develops from real experiences, where we show up, work together, and learn from every moment. In Part 1 of our Leader Spotlight series, Tom, Heidi and Prash reflect on what leadership means to them, the skills they bring to the group, and the proud moments that have shaped their journey.

Tom – Leading Behind the Scenes

“I felt powerful when I joined CYA because it opened up new possibilities.

To be a leader, you need to show up, commit the time your life allows, manage it well and have a real passion for campaigning so big things can happen.”

I’m good at organising things in the background and keeping our allies and the group in the loop. I’m confident in holding people accountable when they say they’re going to do something for CYA, and I enjoy finding new ways to bring people together, even with a new biscuit breaker!

My proudest moments include meeting with OFCOM and supporting the Online Safety Bill. We felt very lucky to have made this connection and were able to share our thoughts and experiences, which was a really positive part of my leadership journey. Winning the SMK David and Goliath Award was also a big achievement. I didn’t think we would win when they announced our name, so I was really happy. I’ve also really enjoyed all of the ally gatherings, seeing people we’ve built relationships with get involved in our work and campaigns. We would love to have even more allies join us.

Heidi – Leading With Care and Confidence

“I think of leadership as having the power to change things, whether that’s influencing laws in Parliament or achieving smaller wins.”

I’m good at talking, taking notes, and helping new members feel comfortable in our sessions. I like to work hard, and I’m also good at noticing when people aren’t feeling themselves and cheering them up.

Proudest Moments
I loved going to the West Midlands Combined Authority Youth Day with Melissa and Lily. I was able to share what CYA does and talk about our work, which was a really exciting experience. I also really enjoy having 1-1s with the team, supporting them and helping them feel confident in their roles.

Prash – Leading With Energy and Collective Care

“CYA know me as the party organiser! I love that we all come together to socialise.”

Being a leader means working hard and keeping the group together. I love taking a leadership role in collective care, making sure everyone feels supported. I organise socials, make sure we look after ourselves during meetings, and bring fun into our sessions.

I felt proud receiving the award and chairing my first meetings. I also really enjoyed taking on a bigger role at our ally gathering, co-chairing with Joey. I love leading on collective care and making sure we all look after each other. I really enjoy bringing everyone together to socialise and have fun.

What Next?
